Coos Bay, OR.

Coos Bay, OR is about a 12 hour drive from San Jose. I hear that the best time to go here is in the late summer and fall, mainly because of the rain, I guess it is less frequent during this time of the year. The weekend we went was great! Very nice weather.

Coos Bay is the southern most point to the Oregon sand dunes, I am told that the dunes extend 75 miles to the north. We have not gotten past the first 5 miles. There is a lot to see and do. The dunes are all sand and there is vegetation everywhere as well as some lakes and ponds to avoid. We camped on a paved area, it cost us a few dollars a day to stay there, but there were flushing toilets a few hundred steps away. If you camp in the dunes there is no fee for camping.

The thing you must really be aware of is how loud your vehicle is. They have some very strictly enforced sound laws. Also make sure you have a working rear light. We were never stopped and checked, nor did we run across any mandatory check points which we were warned about. If you are unsure of how loud your vehicle is, there are some rangers that are driving around with orange "courtesy sound check" vests on. Yes, we were told stories about people turning around at the check points, and I guess they live for that. If they see you good luck trying to get away.
